On Wednesday the 17th of June, the Wesley Hospital Auditorium was filled with a community of people who were eager to learn more about cardiovascular research and how the field of spatial biology is redefining precision medicine.
The event, At the Heart of Discovery: Advancing Personalised Cardiovascular Care, was an excellent opportunity for medical research advocates to connect, learn, and network. The evening celebrated progress - scientific, clinical, and human, and explored the possibilities being unlocked by spatial medicine, and the opportunities this provides for patient care.
Our first speaker was Intensivist and Executive Director of the Queensland Spatial Biology Centre, (QSBC) Professor John Fraser AO, who shared insights into the latest advancements in precision medicine, the origins of the Queensland Spatial Biology Centre (QSBC), the collaborative environment that enables this research, and the centre’s forward‑looking treatment goals for cardiovascular care and research.
Dr Eliot Peyster shared how he is transforming cardiovascular care through human tissue science, as well as the ongoing challenges of heart disease treatments for Australians. His work leverages spatial biology and artificial intelligence to identify hidden signals within heart tissue, with the goal of enabling earlier, more personalised care for patients and for use of predicting transplant rejection before it occurs.
The event was supported by the Rosalie Martin Memorial Fund, as part of the Wesley Research Institute Advocates Event Series. The Rosalie Martin Event Series was established in memory of Rosalie Martin AM, a former Wesley Research Institute Board Member, thanks to a generous gift from her family. The Rosalie Martin Memorial Fund enables us to host Advocate Events throughout the year, to engage the community with our work and further our impact.
“It was wonderful to see such a diverse group of people at the event, from medical researchers, doctors and allied health professionals to supporters and donors, all coming together to learn more about how cardiovascular research is transforming care and paving the way towards more personalised treatment options for people with serious heart conditions,” said Wesley Research Institute CEO Andrew Barron.
