Andrew Barron

Chief Executive Officer

Leading the Executive Leadership Team, Andrew is the Chief Executive Officer at Wesley Research Institute.

Andrew is responsible for the achievement of the strategic goals of Wesley Research Institute and oversees its various operations.

He has previously worked as a senior executive for nine years at St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital, four of which as General Manager. He also served for more than two years as a Wesley Research Institute Board member during his tenure at St Andrew’s Hospital. With experience as Chief Operating Officer with the Royal Flying Doctor Service (QLD) for nearly five years, he is a strong transformational executive leader.

Andrew has delivered sustained financial and cultural benefits across health, community services, aviation and financial services industries. He has successfully shaped and implemented business development strategies in a patient/customer-centred context.

Nicole Berkhout

Chief Financial Officer

As the Chief Financial Officer, Nicole is responsible for the overall financial management of Wesley Research Institute.

Nicole plays a vital role in facilitating economic sustainability, encouraging efficient use of financial resources, and contributing to corporate strategy. Nicole is a qualified CPA and has held senior financial leadership roles for over 20 years across various sectors internationally and in Australia, including hospitality and franchising, manufacturing, sporting organisations, investment, and infrastructure. She has extensive experience in delivering positive organisational outcomes through a risk management lens in high-performing, customer-centric, and purpose-driven organisations.  Always ensuring a people-first approach to sustainable financial management and growth.

Sherman Leung

Head of Research Operations

Sherman is Head of Research Operations at Wesley Research Institute and is responsible for the strategic planning and operation of the Clinical Trials Centre, Biobank, Research Office and Research Programs.

Sherman holds a Bachelor of Science with first-class honours and a University Medal, and a PhD in translational research. He has held roles at Microba Life Sciences a Brisbane-based ASX-listed biotech, and was part of the leadership team at Nucleus Network – an early-stage clinical trials site for some of the world’s leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

He is trained in Good Clinical Practice, is a certified PRINCE2 Practitioner, and has a track record in driving tangible change for research organisations, helping to improve their culture and performance.

He contributes his spare time to the greater good through being a Board Director of the Australian Clinical Trials Alliance (ACTA), Co-Chair to the Clinical and Consumer Advisory Group of the $75m Australian Teletrials Program, Co-Chair to the Clinical Trials Advocacy Working Group of the Queensland Clinical Trials Consortium (QCTC), former member of the Metro North Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC), and Editorial Board for ‘Trials’ – a journal promoting all aspects of trials including methods, processes and non-significant outcomes for transparency in the field.

David Sloan

Head of Philanthropy

David is the Head of Philanthropy at Wesley Research Institute and is committed to advancing the organisation’s goals by cultivating strategic partnerships, implementing effective fundraising strategies, and fostering a culture of philanthropy. With a keen focus on driving social change, he aims to elevate the organisation’s philanthropic efforts, ensuring sustainable funding streams for impactful research that addresses pressing health and societal challenges.

David is a seasoned leader in the non-profit sector, with expertise in community services, business development, fundraising, policy, and research, holding a Master’s in Social Science from Queen’s University of Belfast and a Master’s in Business (Philanthropy and Non-profit Studies) from Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

Driven by a profound passion for collaboration and social change, David has led various initiatives across the U.K., Europe, and Australia. Currently, he also serves on the Board of the non-profit, GiveOUT Australia and acts as an adviser to innovative start-up Fundraise for Australia.
