Picture this: A loved one goes in for their first routine mammogram and ultrasound screening —then comes the devastating news: it’s breast cancer.

That’s what happened to Emma. At only 41, she was set to go back to work after the Christmas break. Then, she got the devastating news.

The situation sent me into a terrifying spin of panic and distress. I just couldn’t see a way forward.

Emma
Today, Emma is living well beyond treatment, thanks to research.

Our Clinical Grant Program—funded by generous supporters—changes lives. It helped Emma thrive after breast cancer, and now it’s helping many others in our community. Research like this can’t happen without the support of the community.

After 12 months of intensive treatment, Emma was left to navigate life after cancer on her own. She had survived, but she didn’t have the tools or support to truly thrive.

That’s where research made the difference.

One of the biggest factors in my recovery was participating in the EMERALD Study—a virtual lifestyle program funded by Wesley Research Institute. It gave me the support, evidence-based information, and skills to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It truly changed my future.

A cancer diagnosis changes your life, but it can also change it for the better. Today, I see life through a completely new perspective, and I’ve embraced opportunities I never thought possible including completing a triathlon!

Emma, Cancer Survivor and Research Participant.
Emma is proof that research isn’t just about the future—it’s changing lives today.

Wesley Research Institute is the official research partner of UnitingCare Queensland (UCQ). Our Clinical Grant Program helps clinicians at The Wesley Hospital, St. Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital, Buderim Private Hospital and St. Stephen’s Hospital start important and innovative research. This research focuses on key areas that matter to both the Institute and UCQ.

The EMERALD Study is just one example of the invaluable research that UCQ clinicians produce that changes lives.

Clinicians do more than treat patients. They also lead research that creates real solutions, improving lives quickly and effectively.

These medical breakthroughs mean patients are living longer, treatments are becoming more effective, and care is improving every day. They aren’t just wins for healthcare – they enable moments that can change everything for patients and their families.

When clinicians receive the tools to innovate, patients see the results. However, research can only move forward as fast as funding allows. Learn more and help fund life-changing research that improves care for every patient today.
