Spatial biology is transforming how we understand disease and how we treat it. As this field rapidly evolves, Wesley Research Institute is proud to be at the forefront of research that’s driving real-world impact.

On Monday, 24 November the Wesley Hospital Auditorium was filled with a community of people who were eager to learn more about spatial biology, including the latest research and how this field is redefining precision medicine.

The event, Spatial Biology: A New Frontier in Precision Medicine, was an excellent opportunity for medical research advocates to connect, learn, and network. The evening celebrated progress - scientific, clinical, and human - and explored the possibilities being unlocked by spatial medicine, and the opportunities this provides for patient care.

Our first speaker was Intensivist and Clinical Director of the Queensland Spatial Biology Centre, (QSBC) Professor John Fraser AO, who shared the latest advancements in precision medicine, along with the history behind the establishment of the Queensland Spatial Biology Centre (QSBC) and its treatment objectives.

Associate Professor Arutha Kulasinghe, Scientific Director of the QSBC, then explored the latest research in spatial medicine and how his team at the QSBC is helping transform treatment approaches for cancer and other serious diseases.

A highlight of the night was the In Conversation panel discussion, moderated by Professor David McGiffin. Our speakers answered questions from the audience and we heard from tongue cancer survivor, Ataia Elhage, who provided insights from the patient perspective. Her story is a powerful reminder of why we invest in innovative research.

The event was supported by the Rosalie Martin Memorial Fund, as part of the Wesley Research Institute Advocates Event Series. The Rosalie Martin Event Series was established in memory of Rosalie Martin AM, a former Wesley Research Institute Board Member, thanks to a generous gift from her family.  The Rosalie Martin Memorial Fund enables us to host Advocate Events throughout the year, to engage the community with our work and further our impact.

"It was great to see a range of different attendees at the event, from medical researchers, doctors and allied health professionals, to supporters and donors," says Wesley Research Institute CEO, Andrew Barron.

Thank you to our speakers and panellists for such an insightful discussion. It’s clear that innovation and collaboration are not just shaping the future - they’re bringing real hope to patients and families.

We invite you to follow us on social media to stay up to date with our research breakthroughs, news,  events and patient stories.
