    A/Prof John Allan

    Patron

    A/Prof John Allan has been an obstetrician and gynaecologist Visiting Medical Practitioner at The Wesley Hospital since 1984. He is the Chief Academic Medical Officer of UnitingCare Health and Head of the UnitingCare Health Clinical School. 

    Emeritus Professor John Pearn
    Patron

    Professor John Pean is a senior pediatrician, academic, doctor-soldier, researcher and writer. He was awarded his higher Doctorate of Medicine and is the author of over 500 papers.

    Martin Albrecht AC

    Patron

    Mr Martin Albrecht AC is a prominent Australian businessman, best known for his service as Chairman, previously CEO (1985-200) of Thiess Pty Ltd. He is a former Wesley Medical Research Chairman. 

      Our Board

      The Wesley Medical Research Board, chaired by Mr Charlie Sartain, consists of skilled and dedicated people who govern the organisation and seek to contribute to and assist with fundraising for medical research.

      Chairman

      Our Chair, Charlie Sartain, joined the Wesley Medical Research Board in 2009. Charlie has more than 30 years of international mining experience. He was Chief Executive Officer of Xstrata’s global copper business for nine years from 2004, during which he oversaw the growth of the business to become one of the world’s leading copper producers, with operations in seven countries. He is a member of the UQ Senate and Chair of the Advisory Board of the Sustainable Minerals Institute at UQ.

        Dr Claudia Giurgiuman

        Chief Executive Officer

        Dr Claudia Giurgiuman joined Wesley Medical Research in 2019. She has over 20 years’  experience in the conduct and management of health research, and has held senior management positions in the not-for-profit sector at the Children’s Hospital Foundation, Icon Cancer Centre and Mater Research. She is President/Chair of the Women in Technology Board and Chair of the independent Research Advisory Committee for the Sunshine Coast Health Foundation (Wishlist).

          Michael Krieg

          Board Member

          Michael Krieg has over 30 years’ experience in the health care sector, commencing his career as a nurse and working across numerous areas of practice before transitioning to executive leadership in public and private hospitals across Western Australia, Victoria and Tasmania. In 2017 Michael became the General Manager of The Wesley Hospital before being appointed the Group Executive Hospitals for UnitingCare Queensland in 2019. 

            Peter Crowley

            Board Member

            Peter Crowley is a highly experienced business leader and public company director with 15 years of experience leading public companies and 17 years of experience serving on public company boards both in Australia and overseas.

              Dr Ian Dickinson AM

              Board Member

              Dr Ian Dickinson has been an orthopaedic surgeon at the Wesley Hospital for over 25 years. He has also served as Chairman of the Queensland Branch of the Australian Orthopaedic Association. 

                Prof MaryLou Fleming

                Board Member

                Professor Marylou Fleming is Head of the School of Public Health and Social Work at the Queensland University of Technology. She brings over 25 yrs experience in public health and health promotion and sits on the Board of the Metro North Hospital and Health Service.

                  Cheryl Clayton

                  Board Member

                  Cheryl Clayton is the Director of Clinical Services at The Wesley Hospital. She has worked in senior leadership roles within public and private health sectors and in addition to her clinical and leadership qualifications, Cheryl is a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

                    Dr James Aylward

                    Board Member

                    Dr Jim Aylward is an innovative researcher and an active mentor for tech start-ups in health sciences. He was awarded the 2018 Clunies Ross Innovation Award for developing Picato, an anti-skin cancer drug.

                      Dr John Lumley

                      Board Member

                      Dr John Lumley is a colorectal surgeon practising at The Wesley Hospital. John has served on the executive of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia, and the Colorectal Society of Australia and New Zealand.

                        Mairi McNeil

                        Board Member

                        Mairi McNeill commenced as General Manager of St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital in December 2018. She is an experienced healthcare executive who has worked in the private industry for over  23 years, and has been a member of executive teams for the last 18 years.   

                          Dr John Rivers

                          Board Member

                          Dr John Rivers is a practising cardiologist and founding member of the Queensland Cardiovascular Group. He has a long term interest in medical quality systems, particularly clinician-driven systems for measuring and improving patient outcomes, and the interface with clinical governance. 

                            David Hairsine

                            Board Member

                            David Hairsine is a highly experienced business leader with many years of driving growth strategy as General Manager, Finance and Treasury at mining company PanAust Limited and now works in a consultant role to the same.

                              Neal O'Connor

                              Board Member

                              Neal O'Connor was appointed a Non-Executive Director in November 2020. He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree and has extensive experience in the resource industry bringing expertise in Corporate Governance and Risk Management to the Board. Neal also holds a Non-Executive Director role on the Board of Mitchell Services Ltd and was formerly General Counsel and Company Secretary, and an Executive Committee member of the global Xstrata Copper mining company. 

                                Des Olling

                                Company Secretary

                                Des Olling has a long history as a Company Secretary in private and multi national companies. He joined Wesley Medical Research in May 2016 as a volunteer and was appointed Company Secretary in June 2018.
