Executive Leadership Team
Dr Claudia Giurgiuman
Chief Executive Officer
Leading the Executive Leadership Team, Claudia is the Chief Executive Officer at Wesley Medical Research.
Claudia is responsible for the achievement of the strategic goals of Wesley Medical Research and provides strong academic and research leadership for the organisation, whilst facilitating the overarching management and development of the organisation in Brisbane and beyond.
Holding over 20 years’ experience in the conduct and management of medical research which included work as a biomedical researcher in the field of epithelial pathobiology and hepatology, Claudia transitioned to senior management positions in research and not-for-profit organisations including the Children’s Hospital Foundation, Icon Cancer Centre, Mater Research, and Women in Technology (WiT).
Claudia has a PhD in Medicine, a Postgraduate Certificate in Project Management, and is studying for a Master in Business Administration at The University of Queensland. She is Chair of the Sunshine Coast Health Foundation (Wishlist) Research Advisory Committee and former Member of the Association of Australian Medical Research Institute Research Strategy Network Steering Committee and former Chair and President of the Women in Technology Board.
Head of Research Operations
Laura is the Head of Research Operations and a member of the Executive Leadership Team, at Wesley Medical Research.
Responsible for the management of the Clinical Trials Centre, the investigator-initiated research program and biobank at Wesley Medical Research, Laura began her career as a registered nurse in adult and paediatric care, including ward management. Continuing on, she has used her clinical knowledge and background to transition into senior project management, notably at Queensland Health and the Australian National University. Laura has extensive experience managing and growing clinical trial units and facilities for University of Queensland, Genesis Care and the Translation Research Institute.
In each role, she was key in building research capability and establishing credibility with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders including executives, academics, clinical staff and commercial sponsors. She has led a team of post-graduate students, research nurses, senior allied health clinicians and research assistants.
Chief Finance Officer
Simon is the Chief Finance Officer and a member of the Executive Leadership Team.
Simon is responsible for the financial governance and reporting functions of Wesley Medical Research to meet the requirements of the Audit and Risk and Investment Committees.
He is a highly experienced executive who has held roles as Chief Finance Officer in health and education across profit and not-for-profit organisations, in both the private and public sector. With a focus on philanthropic financial accounting and financial management, he has also held non-executive director roles. In previous roles Simon has also had oversight of Information Communications Technology and Project Management.
He is a Certified Practising Accountant with a Masters in Commerce and a Bachelor of Economics from The University of Queensland.
