Teenage cancer victim’s memory lives on
The 17th Annual Justin Cameron Cancer Care Foundation presentation on 10 January 2008 will bring mixed emotions for his family Alan, Rhonda and Lauren Cameron of Bellbowrie.
This year’s event will mark the year that the Foundation’s work surpasses the number of years of Justin’s life.
Justin lost his battle with Ewing’s Sarcoma in 1990 only thirteen days shy of his 17th birthday – but his tragically short life has made a significant and enduring difference through the dedication and persistence of his family.
Justin’s goal was to study medicine. Through the establishment of the Foundation and its ongoing funding of cancer related research and equipment, Justin will always play a part in medicine.
The funds that his family has continued to generate have ensured that Justin’s wish to make the world a better place is being realised increasingly year by year.
“Our family’s decision to hold the presentations on Justin’s birthday has been a great motivator. What better day to join with our family and friends to celebrate Justin’s life and his dream,” the Cameron family said.
“With the unfailing support of this wonderful group, the Foundation has been able to assist cancer patients and their families through various research projects, bursaries and room sponsorships.”
The Wesley Research Institute in Auchenflower manages the Justin Cameron Cancer Care Foundation, which was established in1991.
In the 2008 presentation, the Foundation will officially announce its sponsorship of a new pathology room in the Institute’s new Clinical Trials Centre.
The Wesley Research Institute’s Clinical Trials Centre provides the resources to facilitate the development and evaluation of innovative new medical treatments and clinical procedures.
The presentation will also announce the donation of $8,000 for a state-of-the-art microscope and digital camera for the Institute’s recently established Tissue Bank.
The largest facility of its kind in Queensland, the Tissue Bank collects and stores ethically consented cancer specimens to provide researchers with an invaluable resource for investigating the origins and development of cancer and other diseases.
Professor Julie Campbell AO, Director of The Wesley Research Institute, said the Institute was extremely grateful for the Foundation’s support of its cancer research.
“On behalf of the thousands of people touched by the Institute’s cancer research, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Cameron Family for their determination to make something very positive come out of their personal tragedy,” she said.
