Vision
Downloads
To make a lasting difference to health care practices by improving quality of life and patient care through medical research.
The Wesley Research Institute is an independent, not-for-profit organisation located in the grounds of The Wesley Hospital in Brisbane. It is part of the Uniting Care and Uniting CareHealth family.
The Institute conducts research that focuses on improving patient care and quality of life. Our clinical and applied research aims to discover, test and refine new techniques for better diagnosis and treatment of illness and disease.
We take a collaborative approach to research, bringing together doctors, nurses, allied health professionals (such as physiotherapists, radiographers etc), scientists, patients and the community to work toward a common goal – turning basic scientific findings into better health care outcomes for patients as quickly as possible.
Working directly with patients, research by our clinicians is improving patient care and quality of life through:
- Faster, more accurate diagnoses
- Fewer, less severe side effects
- New treatments for faster, improved recovery
While our research is based at Uniting CareHealth hospitals, the findings from our research go on to benefit patients everywhere through translation into better health care practices hospital-wide (public and private), state-wide, nation-wide and world-wide.

Our future
Established in 1994, the Institute is currently experiencing an exciting phase of growth. Three new facilities will be opened and operational by 2009 to form an innovative research precinct at The Wesley Hospital.
These facilities will include:
- Queensland’s largest purpose-built Tissue Bank to store cancer tissue for research purposes
- A state-of the-art Clinical Trials Centre to ensure the latest, safe and effective treatments are made available sooner
- The Health and Medical Research Centre, dedicated to translating basic scientific findings into improved health care practices
By expanding our facilities, we expect to triple the amount of research we can do and apply our findings to better treatment or earlier diagnosis to build healthier, happier communities.
