Neuroscience at WMR: Improving Physical and Mental Health

The School of Hard Knocks charity has improved the mental and physical health of almost half of its homeless and disadvantage members, a year-long study has found. The study is supported by Wesley Medical Research in collaboration with University of Queensland.

The School of Hard KnocksĀ runs arts-based activities such as creative writing, musical theatre activities as well as the Choir of Hard Knocks, which shot to fame on the ABC TV series in 2007.

University of Queensland music psychologist and WMR researcher Genevieve Dingle tracked 56 members from the first two Queensland programs, musical theatre and percussion, from when they joined to how they felt 12 months later.

It found 44 per cent perceived their mental health had improved, while 46 per cent said the same for their physical health.

None said their mental health had become worse.
